RGB: Building Color With Light

Screens emit light. RGB is additive: start from black (no light) and add red, green, and blue light to build every color. Max all three and you get white. Because it adds emitted light, RGB can produce very bright, saturated colors — the vivid blues and greens you see on a phone screen.

CMYK: Building Color With Ink

Paper reflects light. CMYK is subtractive: start from white paper and add cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (K) ink, each of which absorbs (subtracts) part of the spectrum. More ink = darker. Because ink can only ever remove light, CMYK can’t reach the brightest colors RGB can — there is simply no "glow."

Why Colors Shift in Print

RGB’s range of reproducible colors (its gamut) is larger than CMYK’s. When you send a bright RGB design to print, any color outside the CMYK gamut gets clipped to the nearest printable color — usually duller. Neon greens, electric blues, and pure bright oranges are the usual casualties.

Which to Use
